PHARMACHOLOGIC EFFECT
An antiprotozoal agent.
By blocking sulfhydryl enzyme systems, it disrupts metabolic processes in the simplest (including trichomonads, amoebae), as well as some spirochetes. To reduce the resorption of the drug (and the risk of developing possible intoxication), it is necessary to maintain the acidic environment of the vagina.
Dextrose, which is part of the drug, is a nutrient substrate for lactobacilli of normal vaginal microflora.
Lactobacilli decompose dextrose to form lactic acid, provide an acidic environment of the vagina.
Boric acid also supports the acidic environment of the vagina.

Sulfanilamide is a bacteriostatic agent, the mechanism of action is due to competitive antagonism with PABA and inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase activity, which leads to a disruption in the synthesis of dihydrofolic and then tetrahydrofolic acid and, as a result, disruption of the synthesis of nucleic acids of microorganisms.
