PHARMACHOLOGIC EFFECT

Bisacodyl is a locally acting laxative from the group of diphenylmethane derivatives.
As a local laxative with antiresorptive effect, Bisacodyl after hydrolysis in the large intestine increases the secretion of water and electrolytes in the large intestine, accelerates and increases its peristalsis. This leads to stimulation of defecation, a decrease in evacuation time and softening of the stool.
The effect is due to direct stimulation of nerve endings in the mucosa of the large intestine.

INDICATIONS

- constipation due to hypotension of the large intestine;

- cleansing of the intestine in terms of preoperative preparation;

- preparation for instrumental and roentgenological research.

DOSING MODE

For constipation, if the doctor did not appoint otherwise, it should be used: adults and children older than 10 years - 1 suppository per day.
The suppository is introduced into the rectum with a pointed end forward. The action takes about 30 minutes.
When preparing for research, pre- and post-operative treatment, medical conditions that require relief of defecation, Dulcolax should be used under medical supervision.

It is recommended in combination with tablets to achieve complete emptying.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Do not use the drug for a long time.
If there is a need for daily intake of laxatives, you should consult a doctor to determine such causes. Long-term use can lead to fluid loss, disruption of electrolyte balance and hypokalemia.
Dizziness and fainting were observed in patients taking Dulcolax.
The analysis showed that these cases are associated with fainting during defecation (or a syncope caused by stress during defecation) or with a vasovagal response to abdominal pain that may be associated with constipation, which forced patients to take laxatives and are not necessarily associated with taking the drug .
Children should not take bisacodyl without a doctor's recommendation.

OVERDOSE

When an overdose is possible: diarrhea, dehydration, cramps in the abdomen, violation of water-electrolyte balance, hypokalemia.
Dulcolax, like other laxatives, with a chronic overdose can lead to chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary aldosteronism, urolithiasis. In connection with chronic abuse of laxatives, renal tubular damage, metabolic alkalosis and muscle weakness associated with hypokalemia can develop.
Treatment: symptomatic.

DRUG INTERACTION

Diuretics or glucocorticosteroids increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia) when taking high doses of Dulcolax.

Violation of the electrolyte balance (hypokalemia) enhances the action of cardiac glycosides.
